Fax Server and Fax Over IP (FoIP) Network Fax Server

As organizations continue to build out and expand their new IP infrastructure, VoIP is moving into wider adoption with FoIP (fax-over-IP / fax over a VoIP network) ramping up quickly. Both VoIP and FoIP technologies bring traditional telephony applications into data network environments, allowing organizations to transport phone or fax calls over them. This consolidation of data and communications resources provides an opportunity to leverage a single, common broadband resource and employ the Internet and company Intranets for cost-effective voice, fax and data transmissions over a company’s IP networks.

According to over 500 fax server users and potential users, the following benefits are the most significant when implementing or considering a FoIP solution with the Fax Server software:

  1. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) savings due to network consolidation
  2. Ability to push a consistent fax solution throughout the entire network including remote locations
  3. Improved IT management
  4. Device/application integration

Who will benefit first from adopting FoIP?

That depends.  Organizations that that are planning to transition to an all IP environment, appear to be the most likely to see a return on the investment of consolidating voice, fax and data communication.
If you are seriously looking to expand your communication infrastructure to readily adopt IP support, look for choices that include hardware-based PSTN, hardware-based FoIP, and software-based FoIP (T.37 or T.38) options. Today, FoIP fax transmission is 2-3 times slower as phone line fax transmission. For mission-critical faxing, a digital fax server using digital T1 phone lines is a better solution than fax-over-IP.
